Background of the Study
In an increasingly digital financial landscape, the resilience of online banking systems is paramount to safeguarding customer data and maintaining operational continuity. Citibank Nigeria has prioritized strengthening its online banking infrastructure by implementing robust security protocols, redundant systems, and disaster recovery measures. The bank’s approach involves the integration of multi-factor authentication, encryption standards, and real-time monitoring to ensure that data breaches and cyber-attacks are effectively thwarted (Nwosu, 2023). The theoretical framework for this study is based on cybersecurity and information systems resilience theories, which emphasize that a resilient online system can maintain functionality even under adverse conditions. By continuously updating its security measures and performing regular stress tests, Citibank Nigeria aims to create a secure and reliable online banking environment that instills customer confidence and meets regulatory requirements (Okeke, 2024). Empirical evidence suggests that banks with resilient online systems experience fewer data breaches, leading to enhanced customer trust and reduced reputational risk. However, challenges such as integration with legacy systems and the rapid evolution of cyber threats require ongoing vigilance. This study aims to appraise the resilience of Citibank Nigeria’s online banking system in safeguarding data, evaluating the effectiveness of current security protocols and identifying areas for further enhancement (Ezenwa, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite robust security investments, Citibank Nigeria continues to face challenges in ensuring complete resilience of its online banking system. Occasional security breaches and system downtimes have been reported, indicating vulnerabilities that could compromise customer data (Babatunde, 2023). Integration challenges between modern security solutions and legacy IT infrastructure sometimes result in delays in threat detection and response. Additionally, the fast-paced evolution of cyber threats necessitates continuous system updates, which can strain resources and expose temporary weaknesses. These issues not only threaten data security but also have a negative impact on customer trust and overall system reliability. The gap between the theoretical resilience of online banking systems and the observed operational vulnerabilities highlights the need for a comprehensive assessment of Citibank Nigeria’s current security framework. This study seeks to identify the key factors contributing to system vulnerabilities and propose recommendations to bolster the resilience of the online banking platform, ensuring robust data protection and uninterrupted service (Emeka, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the resilience of Citibank Nigeria’s online banking system in safeguarding customer data.
